I've used Citymapper (
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.citymapper.app.release
) with some success -- it's not ideal for bus checking per se but quite good for how to get from A to B, knows the bus routes and timings, and so on.
(It also has a "how long would it take a rampaging giant green Android robot to get to where you're going" option which I find cute, but YMMV).
